Rufous-sided Honeyeater

The Rufous-sided Honeyeater (Ptiloprora erythropleura) is a passerine bird belonging to the Meliphagidae family, endemic to the montane forests of New Guinea. Its classification and formal documentation emerged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period characterized by intense biological exploration of the island's interior. These birds are specialized inhabitants of mid-mountain forest environments, where their specific morphological traits, including their characteristic rounded wings and notched tails, facilitate agile movement through dense canopy undergrowth.

The species was formally described by the ornithologist Salvadori in 1876. Its common name, the Rufous-sided Honeyeater, reflects the distinct reddish-brown plumage on its flanks, a feature that distinguishes it from related members of the Ptiloprora genus. Evolutionary biologists study this species as part of the broader honeyeater radiation, a group known for their co-evolution with nectar-producing plants.
