Rufous-tailed Plantcutter

The Rufous-tailed Plantcutter, Phytotoma rara, is a passerine bird native to the temperate forests and scrublands of Chile and western Argentina. It belongs to the Cotingidae family and is characterized by its distinctively serrated beak, which has evolved specifically for feeding on leaves, buds, and fruit. The species was first formally described by the naturalist Juan Ignacio Molina in his 1782 work, Saggio sulla storia naturale del Chili, documenting the unique avian diversity of the region for a European audience.

The bird's design is defined by its robust, broad-winged structure and rounded tail, features that aid in its short, fluttering flights between branches.
