Rufous-tailed Tailorbird

The Rufous-tailed tailorbird, Orthotomus sericeus, is a small passerine bird native to the lowland forests and mangroves of the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, and Sumatra. Taxonomically described in the 19th century, it belongs to the Cisticolidae family, a group known for its complex vocalizations and intricate nesting behaviors. Like other members of its genus, it is named for the distinctive way it constructs its nest by sewing large leaves together with plant fibers and spider silk, a remarkable display of avian craftsmanship that serves to protect its brood from predators and the elements.

The bird is characterized by its rounded wings and a notably pointed, frequently cocked tail, which gives it a lively and restless appearance while foraging in the mid-canopy. Ornithologists and birdwatchers prize the species for its vibrant rufous crown and olive-green plumage, which provides excellent camouflage within its dense, tropical habitat.
