Rufous-thighed Kite

The Rufous-thighed Kite, or Harpagus diodon, is a bird of prey native to the tropical and subtropical forests of South America. Scientific classification identifies it as a member of the Accipitridae family, a group characterized by their keen vision and sharp talons. Its evolutionary development resulted in a distinct morphology, featuring broad wings for forest navigation and a pointed tail that assists with maneuverability during agile flight through dense canopy environments.

First described by the naturalist Coenraad Jacob Temminck in the early 19th century, the species is distinguished by the rufous coloration on its thighs, from which it derives its common name.
