Rufous-throated Antbird

The Rufous-throated Antbird, Gymnopithys rufigula, is a specialized passerine bird native to the humid forests of the Guiana Shield in northeastern South America. It was formally described by the naturalist Boddaert in 1783, emerging from the era of European colonial exploration when taxonomists sought to categorize the vast biodiversity of the neotropical rainforests. As an obligate follower of army ant swarms, the species occupies a distinct ecological niche, relying on the movement of ants to flush out small arthropods from the leaf litter.

The physical characteristics of the bird, such as its rounded wings and notched tail, reflect its adaptation to the dense, cluttered understory where it resides. These anatomical features allow for the short, burst-like flights necessary to navigate the forest floor while pursuing prey displaced by ants. Unlike some more migratory or canopy-dwelling species, this antbird has remained a subject of steady interest among ornithologists for its complex social behavior and reliance on transient foraging groups.
