Rufous-winged Sparrow

The Rufous-winged Sparrow, scientifically classified as Peucaea carpalis, is a unique avian species primarily found within the desert grasslands of southeastern Arizona and northern Sonora, Mexico. Its taxonomy and distinct morphological features, such as its characteristic rounded wings and notched tail, were formally documented by ornithologist Elliott Coues in 1873. The sparrow occupies a niche habitat that has been subject to significant ecological shifts over the last century, making its historical presence an important indicator of the health of arid grassland ecosystems.

The species was famously thought to have been extirpated from the United States by the turn of the 20th century due to habitat loss from overgrazing and drought, only to be rediscovered in the Altar Valley in 1936. Its recovery has since been the focus of ongoing conservation efforts, as it serves as a representative example of how specialized grassland birds adapt to precarious environments. Because of these population fluctuations, the sparrow has become a significant subject of study for ornithologists interested in the resilience of desert-dwelling passerines.
