Rufous-winged Ground-Cuckoo

The Rufous-winged Ground-Cuckoo, Neomorphus rufipennis, is a member of a cryptic and elusive genus of terrestrial cuckoos primarily inhabiting the dense rainforests of northern South America, particularly within the Guiana Shield. Unlike the more common brood-parasitic cuckoos, this species is largely ground-dwelling, relying on its rounded wings for short, powerful bursts of flight and a long, graduated tail for balance while navigating the dark understory. Its evolutionary lineage is part of the Neomorphinae subfamily, which adapted specifically for a life spent foraging in the leaf litter rather than among the forest canopy.

The species was first formally described by English zoologist George Robert Gray in the mid-19th century, an era defined by intensive taxonomic cataloging of neotropical fauna. Ornithological documentation of this bird remains sparse due to its shy nature and preference for remote, undisturbed habitats.
