Santa Marta Woodstar

The Santa Marta woodstar, Chaetocercus astreans, is a species of hummingbird endemic to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains in northern Colombia. It was first described in the late 19th century, a period during which European naturalists were intensely focused on cataloging the biodiversity of the South American Andes. Its evolutionary history is tied to the unique cloud forest environment of this isolated mountain range, where the species developed specific physical adaptations, including a distinctive notched tail and pointed wings, to navigate the dense, high-altitude vegetation.

The species is representative of the genus Chaetocercus, known for its compact size and high-velocity flight patterns.
