Brown Inca

The Brown Inca, or Coeligena wilsoni, was first described by the French naturalist Adolphe Delattre and the French ornithologist Jules Bourcier in 1846. Named in honor of the British ornithologist Edward Wilson, this species belongs to the hummingbird family Trochilidae and is endemic to the humid forest borders of the western Andean slopes in Colombia and Ecuador. Its classification reflects the mid-19th-century European fervor for cataloging the biological diversity of South America, with the genus name Coeligena, derived from the Latin for 'heavenly born,' underscoring the era's romantic fascination with the vibrant, jewel-like plumage of these birds.

The design of the Brown Inca—characterized by its pointed, slender wings and a distinctive notched tail—is a specialized evolutionary adaptation for high-altitude nectar feeding and agile flight in dense cloud forest environments. Its muted, brownish-bronze coloration allows it to blend into the shadowy canopy of its habitat, a departure from the more iridescent flashes common among its relatives.
