Sao Tome White-eye

The Sao Tome White-eye, scientifically classified as Zosterops feae, is a small passerine bird endemic to the island of Sao Tome in the Gulf of Guinea. Its existence was documented in the late 19th century, with the species named in honor of the Italian explorer and naturalist Leonardo Fea, who collected specimens during his expeditions. This bird evolved in isolation within the dense forests and plantations of the island, adapting its rounded wing and tail morphology to navigate the complex canopy structures of its tropical environment.

The design of the species, defined by its evolution rather than human artistic intervention, represents a hallmark of insular speciation. Ornithologists characterize the bird by its olive-green plumage and distinctive white eye-ring, a trait shared by its widespread genus.
