Sapphire-vented Puffleg

The Sapphire-vented Puffleg, Eriocnemis luciani, was formally described by the French naturalist Jules Bourcier in 1847. Like many hummingbirds cataloged during the mid-19th century, its discovery emerged from the feverish era of South American avian exploration, where European collectors sought to document the diverse species inhabiting the high-altitude cloud forests of the Andes. Its specific name honors the French ornithologist and naturalist Lucien Bonaparte.

The species is distinguished by its characteristic feathered leggings—the 'pufflegs' from which the genus derives its name—which are a striking feature of this group. The design of the bird, characterized by its pointed wings and notched tail, is a functional evolutionary adaptation for high-speed maneuvering within the dense, montane vegetation.
