The Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet, known scientifically as Touit purpuratus, is a small neotropical parrot native to the humid forests of the Amazon Basin, spanning regions including Brazil, Colombia, and the Guianas. As a wild species, its historical context is defined by its elusive nature and its classification within the genus Touit, a group of parrots noted for their specialized, canopy-dwelling habits that keep them largely sequestered from human observation. It was first formally described by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788, based on specimens collected during the early waves of European exploration into the South American interior.

The bird's distinct physical characteristics, specifically its rounded wings and pointed, wedge-shaped tail, are evolutionary adaptations optimized for the dense, multi-layered environment of the primary rainforest. Ornithologists and illustrators, such as those contributing to the major 19th-century taxonomic works, captured its appearance by highlighting the vibrant violet-blue patch on its rump, which gives the species its common name.
