Savile's Bustard

Savile's Bustard was formally described in 1920 by the British ornithologist Frank Nicholson based on specimens collected in the Sahel region of Africa. Named in honor of Frank Savile, a British colonial official, this small bustard inhabits the dry savanna belts stretching from Mauritania to Sudan. It is a member of the family Otididae, adapted to thrive in harsh, arid landscapes through a cryptic coloration that blends seamlessly with the sparse, scrubby terrain it favors.

The species is characterized by its broad wings and rounded tail, physical traits that facilitate its specific flight patterns and ground-dwelling behavior. It typically avoids detection by crouching or walking slowly through tall grasses, a survival strategy that has historically made it a challenging subject for field observation.
