Sharp-tailed Tyrant

The Sharp-tailed Tyrant is a passerine bird native to the grasslands of South America, primarily within the Cerrado biome of Brazil and parts of Argentina and Paraguay. Its evolutionary lineage places it within the family Tyrannidae, the largest family of birds, which evolved to occupy diverse niches across the Americas. The species is characterized by its distinct physical adaptations, including a sharply pointed wing structure and an elongated, deeply forked tail that aids in its specialized flight patterns within open savanna environments.

The species was formally described by the French ornithologist Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in 1818. Ornithological documentation from the nineteenth century often sought to categorize these flycatchers based on their distinct tail morphology, which serves as a key identifier for the genus Culicivora. Today, the bird is regarded as a sensitive indicator species for the health of South American grasslands, and its design reflects a highly specialized evolutionary response to the necessity of maneuverability while hunting insects in low-lying vegetation.
