Tumbes Chat-Tyrant

The Tumbes Chat-Tyrant, scientifically classified as Ochthoeca salvini, is a passerine bird belonging to the tyrant flycatcher family. Its taxonomy and distinct lineage within the Andes were formalised through ornithological study in the late 19th century, with the species named in honour of the British naturalist Osbert Salvin. These birds are specifically adapted to the humid montane forests of the Tumbes region, a unique ecological zone that straddles the border between Peru and Ecuador.

The biological design of the Tumbes Chat-Tyrant is defined by its specialised morphology, which facilitates survival in dense, cloud-covered forest understories. Its broad wing shape provides the necessary lift for short, agile bursts of flight used to capture insects mid-air, while its notched tail serves as a precise rudder for manoeuvring through complex vegetation. As a species, it is recognised by ornithologists as a key indicator of forest health, reflecting the delicate evolutionary balance of the Andean slopes.
