Shelley's Francolin

Shelley's Francolin, or Scleroptila shelleyi, was scientifically described by William Ogilvie-Grant in 1895. The species was named in honor of the British ornithologist George Ernest Shelley, a noted collector and author of works on African birds. It is primarily found in the grassland and savanna habitats of south-eastern Africa, where its elusive nature and reliance on specific ecological niches have made it a bird of interest for regional field researchers and ornithologists studying the Phasianidae family.

The bird's physical characteristics, most notably its rounded wing and tail shapes, are evolutionary adaptations that suit its lifestyle as a ground-dwelling game bird.
