Shelley's Greenbul

Shelley's Greenbul, or Arizelocichla masukuensis, was formally described by the British ornithologist George Ernest Shelley in 1897. Named in his honor, this passerine bird is native to the montane forests of East Africa, specifically inhabiting regions across Malawi, Tanzania, and parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It belongs to the family Pycnonotidae and serves as a quintessential example of the specialized avifauna found in the isolated 'sky islands' of the Albertine Rift and Eastern Arc mountains.

The bird's distinct physical profile, characterized by its rounded wings and rounded tail, is an evolutionary adaptation suited for short, agile flights within dense undergrowth and mid-level forest canopies. Like many species in the Arizelocichla genus, it was identified during the late 19th-century push to catalog the biodiversity of African highlands. Its taxonomy has been subject to various reclassifications over the decades as ornithologists refined the genetic relationships within the bulbul family, yet it remains recognized as a distinct inhabitant of high-altitude evergreen forests.
