Short-tailed Hawk

The short-tailed hawk (Buteo brachyurus) is a species of bird of prey that has long fascinated ornithologists due to its distinct physiological adaptation to its hunting environment. Native primarily to the Neotropics and the southern tip of Florida, this raptor is recognized by its broad wings and characteristically short tail, which allow for a unique hovering flight pattern. It was formally described in 1844 by Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot, following observations made during his extensive documentation of avian life in the Americas.

The species is celebrated among birders for its two distinct color morphs—light and dark—which caused considerable taxonomic confusion in the early twentieth century before researchers confirmed they were indeed the same species. Its design reflects an evolutionary refinement for hunting small birds in open woodland canopy. Unlike many of its cousins in the Buteo genus that soar at high altitudes, the short-tailed hawk is characterized by its bold, low-level hunting behavior, a trait that earned it respect among early naturalists who noted its unusual confidence and specialized niche in the ecosystem.
