Bonelli's Eagle

Bonelli's Eagle, scientifically classified as Aquila fasciata, is a bird of prey native to the Mediterranean basin and parts of Asia. It was first described by French naturalist Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot in 1822 and named after the Italian ornithologist Franco Andrea Bonelli. The species is characterized by its distinctively broad wings, which facilitate soaring over rugged, mountainous terrain, and a relatively long, pointed tail that provides essential maneuverability during high-speed aerial pursuits.

This raptor occupies a significant ecological niche as an apex predator, typically nesting on cliff faces or in large trees. Its plumage and physiology are finely tuned for hunting medium-sized birds and mammals in open landscapes. While the species has faced historical declines due to habitat fragmentation and human encroachment, it remains a symbol of wilderness integrity in southern Europe and northern Africa, where conservation efforts focus on protecting nesting sites and mitigating risks from power lines.
