Short-tailed Starling

The Short-tailed Starling (Aplonis minor) is a passerine bird belonging to the family Sturnidae. It is native to the montane forests of Indonesia and Malaysia, specifically found across islands like Sumatra, Java, and Borneo. As a species, it evolved within the complex ecosystems of Southeast Asian highlands, where its physical characteristics—most notably the short tail and rounded wings—have adapted it for maneuvering through dense canopy foliage.

First formally described by the ornithologist Charles Wallace Richmond in 1899, the species reflects the diverse avian taxonomy identified during the late 19th-century push to categorize Pacific and Southeast Asian wildlife. Its design, if one may call the biological evolution of a species such, is defined by its compact, dark plumage and specialized beak, which facilitate its role as a frugivore and insectivore.
