Sira Tanager

The Sira Tanager, scientifically known as Stilpnia phillipsi, is a rare avian species endemic to a highly restricted range in the Sira Mountains of central Peru. It was formally described in 1969 by ornithologist John P. O'Neill and his colleagues, who discovered the population during an expedition to this isolated cloud forest region. The bird is characterized by its distinctive rounded wing shape and notched tail, features that assist its navigation through the dense, high-altitude understory it calls home.

The discovery of the Sira Tanager highlighted the biological significance of the Cordillera El Sira, a mountain range that had previously been poorly explored by naturalists. Ornithologists often view the species as a prime example of the isolated evolution occurring in the Andean 'sky islands.' While its design—a product of natural selection—is refined for survival in humid montane forests, the species remains a subject of ongoing conservation interest due to the fragility of its limited habitat and the unique evolutionary path that distinguishes it from its relatives in the genus Stilpnia.
