Sirkeer Malkoha

The Sirkeer Malkoha, or Taccocua leschenaultii, is a non-parasitic cuckoo native to the scrublands and open forests of the Indian subcontinent. Named after the French botanist Jean-Baptiste Leschenault de la Tour, it was formally described in the early 19th century as part of the broader effort by colonial naturalists to document the avian biodiversity of South Asia. It belongs to the Cuculidae family, distinct from many of its relatives for its ground-dwelling tendencies and habit of raising its own young rather than engaging in brood parasitism.

The bird is characterized by a long, graduated tail and rounded wings, an anatomical adaptation suited for brief, low-altitude flights through dense thickets. Its plumage, featuring a warm, rufous-brown coloration and a distinctive hooked, cherry-red bill, has made it a subject of interest in classic ornithological illustrations of the era. The species is widely regarded by contemporary naturalists for its cryptic behavior, as it frequently remains hidden within thorny vegetation, relying on its mottled appearance for camouflage against the arid landscapes it inhabits.
