Spectacled Eider

The Spectacled Eider, scientifically classified as Somateria fischeri, is a sea duck native to the arctic coasts of Alaska and northeastern Siberia. It was first formally described by the naturalist Johann Friedrich von Brandt in 1847, who noted the bird’s distinctive plumage patterns around the eyes, which resemble a pair of spectacles. These birds are specialized to survive in harsh, icy environments, utilizing their broad wings for efficient flight over expansive marine foraging grounds and a pointed tail that assists in their maneuverability during deep-sea diving.

The species is characterized by a stark sexual dimorphism, with males displaying a striking black-and-white pattern and an olive-green head, while females exhibit a more cryptic, mottled brown appearance for camouflage during nesting. Historically, they have been the subject of significant conservation interest due to their limited breeding ranges.
