Spot-billed Pelican

The spot-billed pelican is a medium-sized bird native to the inland and coastal waters of Southern Asia. Its evolutionary history is deeply tied to the wetlands and large freshwater lakes of the Indian subcontinent, where it has historically served as a critical indicator species for the health of aquatic ecosystems. The species was formally described by the naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789, emerging from the era of extensive colonial-era taxonomic classification that sought to map the avian diversity of the Eastern world.

The bird's distinct morphology, specifically its broad wing shape and rounded tail, is a functional adaptation to its reliance on thermal gliding and maneuverability in dense marshy environments. These physical traits, combined with the signature dark spots on its bill during the breeding season, distinguish it from other pelican species. Throughout the 20th century, the spot-billed pelican faced significant population declines due to habitat encroachment and the loss of nesting trees, eventually leading to its recognition as a near-threatened species requiring dedicated conservation intervention.
