Spot-flanked Barbet

The spot-flanked barbet, Tricholaema lacrymosa, is an African passerine bird belonging to the Lybiidae family. It was first described by the ornithologist Jean Cabanis in 1878. As a member of the diverse barbet order, it evolved within the mosaic landscapes of East Africa, specifically thriving in the acacia woodlands and riparian forests of regions spanning from South Sudan and Ethiopia down to Tanzania. Its distinctive appearance—characterized by a spotted breast, black facial markings, and rounded wings—reflects an evolutionary adaptation for short, rapid flights between trees in dense canopy environments.

The species is noted by naturalists for its cryptic, rhythmic vocalizations which often reveal its presence before it is visually spotted. Its design, if one can call the product of natural selection such, favors a short, robust tail and a thick, strong bill suitable for a diet primarily consisting of fruit and insects.
