Spotless Starling

The Spotless Starling, Sturnus unicolor, evolved as a distinct species within the Mediterranean basin, occupying a niche primarily across the Iberian Peninsula, northwest Africa, and the islands of the western Mediterranean. Unlike its widespread relative, the Common Starling, this bird adapted to warmer climates, maintaining a restricted range that has historically been defined by Mediterranean scrubland and agricultural landscapes. Its evolutionary development is linked to the geographic isolation of the region, allowing it to diverge while retaining the family characteristics of the Sturnidae, such as its robust beak and strong, agile flight.

The bird is characterized by a sleek, monochromatic plumage that distinguishes it from other starlings, particularly during the breeding season when its feathers exhibit a distinct glossy, oil-slick sheen. Ornithologists have long noted its pointed wing shape and notched tail, features that provide high maneuverability during foraging and social aerial displays.
