Square-tailed Kite

The Square-tailed Kite, scientifically classified as Lophoictinia isura, is a bird of prey endemic to Australia. It occupies a distinct evolutionary niche within the Accipitridae family, characterized by its specialized morphology, including a notably broad, rounded wing shape and its namesake square-cut tail. Evolutionarily, these features facilitate a unique foraging style that relies on slow, graceful gliding just above the forest canopy, allowing the bird to hunt for small vertebrates and eggs in the foliage with high precision.
