Sri Lanka Junglefowl

The Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Gallus lafayettii, is an endemic species native to the island nation of Sri Lanka, where it serves as the national bird. Evolutionarily, it belongs to the Phasianidae family and is a close relative of the red junglefowl, from which the domestic chicken is descended. Its existence is intrinsically tied to the island's unique ecological zones, ranging from lowland rainforests to montane forests, where it has evolved distinct traits such as its rounded wings and pointed, laterally compressed tail feathers suited for dense undergrowth navigation.

The species was first formally described by the French naturalist René Lesson in 1831, who named it in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette. The bird's visual profile is defined by its striking, vibrant plumage, particularly in the male, which features a distinct yellow patch at the center of its red comb. Ornithologists and conservationists have long documented the bird as a flagship species for the island’s biodiversity, noting that its design reflects an adaptation to stable, humid forest habitats rather than the migratory patterns seen in more widespread game birds.
