Sri Lanka Myna

The Sri Lanka Myna, known scientifically as Gracula ptilogenys, is an endemic passerine bird restricted to the tropical forests of southwestern Sri Lanka. First formally described by Edward Blyth in 1846, this species was identified as a distinct member of the Sturnidae family, separated from other myna species by its specific morphological traits, including its distinctively rounded wings and square tail. It primarily inhabits canopy layers in dense evergreen forests, serving as an important indicator species for the ecological health of its native habitat.

The physical design of the species is characterized by its glossy black plumage, vibrant yellow wattles, and a stout, orange-tipped bill. Ornithologists and evolutionary biologists have long studied these features to understand the divergence of island-endemic species within the Gracula genus. While the bird is not a product of human design, its taxonomic history reflects 19th-century efforts to categorize the unique biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent, and it remains a subject of intense conservation interest due to ongoing habitat fragmentation in the Sri Lankan rainforests.
