Stephanie's Astrapia

Stephanie's Astrapia, also known as the Princess Stephanie's Astrapia, is a member of the Paradisaeidae family, endemic to the central highlands of Papua New Guinea. It was first described by German taxonomist Carl Hunstein in 1884 and named in honor of Princess Stephanie of Belgium, the wife of Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria. The discovery occurred during an era of intensive European exploration in New Guinea, where naturalists were eager to document the highly specialized and ornate avian species residing in the island's remote, high-altitude cloud forests.

The bird is characterized by its exceptionally long, graduated tail feathers, which can reach nearly twice the length of its body, and broad wings adapted for gliding through the canopy. These features are a hallmark of its evolutionary adaptation for display in the dense, misty mountain habitats it occupies. While the species was historically sought after for its plumage in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it is now protected under international wildlife conventions and is primarily studied for its intricate courtship behaviors and the distinct genetic variations that define the Astrapia genus.
