Steller's Jay

Steller's Jay was first described by naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller in 1741 during Vitus Bering's expedition to Alaska. The bird is notable for being the only crested jay west of the Rocky Mountains, and its presence serves as a primary marker of the diverse avian biology within the temperate rainforests and coniferous woodlands of western North America. Its distinctive deep blue and charcoal-black plumage was meticulously cataloged during the early scientific exploration of the Pacific Coast.

The species is distinguished by its broad, rounded wings and a distinctively long, pointed tail, which allows for agile flight through dense forest canopies. Beyond its physical anatomy, the bird is culturally significant to many Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, appearing frequently in folklore and oral traditions as a clever, often mischievous figure.
