Stork-billed Kingfisher

The Stork-billed Kingfisher, Pelargopsis capensis, is a large tree kingfisher distributed across the tropical regions of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Classified within the Alcedinidae family, its evolutionary lineage reflects an adaptation to diverse aquatic and forested environments. Historically, this species was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1766, emerging from the early taxonomic efforts to categorize the avian biodiversity of the colonial-era tropics.

The bird is distinguished by its heavy, red, stork-like bill and broad, rounded wings, which facilitate short, powerful bursts of flight across riverbanks and coastal mangroves.
