Sulphur-winged Parakeet

The Sulphur-winged Parakeet, scientifically classified as Pyrrhura hoffmanni, is an avian species native to the mountain forests of Costa Rica and western Panama. First described by German ornithologist Jean Cabanis in 1861, the species is named in honor of the Prussian naturalist Karl Hoffmann, who conducted extensive biological surveys in Costa Rica during the mid-19th century. Its evolutionary history is defined by its adaptation to high-altitude cloud forests, where it occupies a distinct ecological niche compared to other members of the Pyrrhura genus.

The physical design of this parakeet is distinguished by its characteristic rounded wings and a notably pointed tail, structural features that facilitate efficient maneuverability through dense forest canopy. The species is visually defined by the striking yellow feathers on the wings and around the eyes, which provide a sharp contrast to its otherwise muted green plumage. Within the broader context of neotropical ornithology, the species is recognized for its stable but localized population, reflecting a long-standing balance between its environmental requirements and the fragmentation of its highland habitats.
