Sulphur-rumped Tanager

The Sulphur-rumped Tanager (Heterospingus rubrifrons) is a passerine bird native to the humid lowland forests of Panama and northwestern Colombia. Taxonomically, it sits within the Thraupidae family. Its specific epithet, rubrifrons, refers to the distinctive patch of red feathers found on the forehead of the male, a feature that distinguishes it from its close relative, the Golden-browed Tanager. The species was first formally described by Lawrence in 1865, reflecting the mid-19th-century push to catalog the biodiversity of the Neotropical regions.
