Taiwan Liocichla

The Taiwan Liocichla, or Liocichla steerii, is an endemic passerine bird native to the mid-to-high elevation forests of Taiwan. It was first described by the British ornithologist Robert Swinhoe in the late 19th century, named in honor of the American naturalist Joseph Beal Steere, who collected the type specimen during his expedition to Formosa in 1873. The species is part of the Leiothrichidae family, characterized by its adaptation to the dense understory and shrubbery of mountain landscapes.

The bird is distinguished by its olive-green plumage, yellow wing patches, and distinct black-and-white markings around the eyes, which provide a muted but elegant aesthetic profile. Its rounded wings and tail are evolutionary adaptations for short-distance flight and maneuverability within the cluttered mountain forests. It is highly regarded by birdwatchers for its complex, melodic song and is widely considered a flagship species for the conservation of Taiwan’s temperate montane ecosystems.
