Teardrop White-eye

The Teardrop White-eye, scientifically known as Rukia ruki, is an endemic bird species restricted to the island of Chuuk in the Federated States of Micronesia. First described by Ernst Mayr in 1940, it represents a specialized evolutionary lineage within the Zosteropidae family. Its existence is tied to the unique ecological pressures of the high volcanic islands in the Caroline archipelago, where it evolved distinct morphological features, such as its signature white eye-ring and somber plumage, as an adaptation to dense rainforest habitats.

The bird is characterized by a rounded wing shape and a rounded tail, traits that reflect its maneuverability within the forest canopy. While the species is of immense interest to ornithologists studying island biogeography and speciation, it remains a rare and elusive subject in scientific literature.
