Timneh Parrot

The Timneh parrot (Psittacus timneh) is a subspecies of the African grey parrot, indigenous to the forested regions of western Africa, including Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. Historically, these birds were recognized as a distinct population due to their smaller size and darker, charcoal-grey plumage compared to the larger, lighter Congo African grey. They have long been valued in aviculture for their keen intelligence and distinct ability to mimic human speech, though they are notably quieter and often considered more laid-back than their larger relatives.

The taxonomy of the Timneh parrot has seen significant shifts, with many ornithological authorities now elevating it to a full species, Psittacus timneh, rather than a subspecies of Psittacus erithacus. This distinction is supported by both morphological differences—such as their broad wings and characteristically pointed, maroon-colored tail feathers—and genetic divergence. Their history in captivity is closely tied to the broader tradition of keeping African parrots, which gained popularity during the colonial era and later expanded through international wildlife trade before stricter conservation regulations were implemented.
