Gray-cheeked Parakeet

The Gray-cheeked Parakeet, scientifically known as Brotogeris pyrrhoptera, is a small parrot native to the humid forests and scrublands of southwestern Ecuador and northwestern Peru. These birds were historically recognized for their distinct olive-green plumage and characteristic gray cheek patches, which distinguish them from other members of the Brotogeris genus. Their evolutionary adaptation, featuring rounded wings and a pointed, graduated tail, allows for agile flight through dense tropical canopies while foraging for fruits, seeds, and blossoms.

During the mid-to-late 20th century, the species gained prominence within the international aviculture trade due to their social nature and relatively small size. Unfortunately, extensive habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade led to significant declines in their wild population. Conservation efforts have since shifted toward protecting their fragmented lowland forest habitats, and they are now classified as endangered, marking a transition from their past status as common figures in bird collections to a species prioritized for urgent ecological preservation.
