Where it came from

The Trumpet Manucode, or Phonygammus keraudrenii, was formally described by the French naturalist René Primevère Lesson and his colleague Prosper Garnot in 1826. Named in honor of the French physician and explorer Pierre François Keraudren, this bird is a member of the Paradisaeidae family. It is indigenous to the lowland forests of New Guinea and nearby islands, where it evolved its distinctive morphology—specifically its broad wings and pointed, wedge-shaped tail—to navigate dense canopy environments while performing its elaborate aerial displays.

The species is perhaps best known for its unique anatomy, which includes an elongated trachea that coils within the chest cavity, functioning similarly to the tubing of a brass instrument. This physiological adaptation allows the male to produce the resonant, trumpet-like vocalizations that give the bird its common name. In ornithological circles, the manucode is studied as a fascinating example of sexual selection, as these vocal displays serve as the primary mechanism for attracting mates amidst the complex acoustics of their rainforest habitat.
