Van Dam's Vanga

Van Dam's Vanga was formally described by the Dutch naturalist François Pollen in 1866, named in honor of his companion and fellow explorer, Douwe Casparus van Dam. The species is endemic to the dry deciduous forests of northern Madagascar, a region that has faced significant habitat loss, placing the bird in a precarious ecological position. Its discovery occurred during a period of intense European biological exploration in Madagascar, reflecting the era's focus on documenting island-specific biodiversity.
