Ward's Vanga

Ward’s Vanga, scientifically known as Pseudobias wardi, was first described by the British zoologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe in 1877. Named in honor of the naturalist and collector Christopher Ward, this species is endemic to the humid evergreen forests of eastern Madagascar. It occupies a unique position within the Vanga family, often noted for its distinct behavior and the specific structural adaptations of its broad wings and rounded tail, which suit its localized, sedentary life in dense forest understories.

The taxonomy of this species has historically been a subject of interest among ornithologists due to its divergent morphology compared to other vangas. Because it relies heavily on undisturbed primary forest habitats, the species has become a key indicator for conservationists monitoring the ecological health of the Malagasy rainforests.
