The Varzea Schiffornis, scientifically classified as Schiffornis major, is a member of the Tityridae family, specifically endemic to the flooded forests, or varzea, of the Amazon basin. Historically, this species was grouped within the manakin family due to superficial similarities, but genetic studies have since reclassified it into a distinct lineage. It is characterized by its rounded wing shape and distinctively notched tail, features that have evolved to facilitate agile, short-distance flight within the dense, shaded understory of its riverine habitat.

The species was formally described by the ornithologist John Todd Zimmer in the early 20th century, drawing from specimens collected during the extensive biological surveys of the South American interior. Zimmer’s work focused on documenting the nuanced morphological differences between Schiffornis species, highlighting the subtle plumage variations that differentiate the Varzea Schiffornis from its relatives.
