Vigors's Sunbird

Vigors's Sunbird (Aethopyga vigorsii) was formally described by the English naturalist William Henry Sykes in 1832. Named in honor of the Irish zoologist Nicholas Aylward Vigors, the bird is endemic to the Western Ghats of India. During the 19th-century era of colonial scientific exploration, specimens like this were highly sought after by European ornithologists to catalog the biodiversity of the Indian subcontinent, often appearing in the era's comprehensive illustrated volumes on Asian wildlife.

The bird's design reflects its role as a specialized nectarivore.
