Copper-throated Sunbird

The Copper-throated Sunbird, or Leptocoma calcostetha, is a species native to the mangrove forests and coastal scrublands of Southeast Asia, ranging from Thailand and the Malay Peninsula to Borneo and the Philippines. Historically, the species was categorized by naturalists in the 19th century as part of the broader sunbird family, Nectariniidae, which is renowned for its evolutionary parallel to the hummingbirds of the Americas. Its evolution is intrinsically linked to the specialized flora of the intertidal mangrove ecosystem, upon which it relies for both sustenance and nesting materials.

The bird's distinct physical characteristics, including its pointed wings designed for swift, agile flight through dense coastal foliage and its characteristically notched tail, were captured in various ornithological plates throughout the early 20th century. These illustrations were intended to document the vibrant, metallic iridescence of the male's plumage, which serves as a critical identification marker for researchers. While the species remains a subject of study in avian biology, it is currently monitored due to the shrinking habitat of the mangrove environments it occupies.
