Wallace's Scops-Owl

Wallace's Scops-Owl was formally described by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1864 following his exploration of the Indonesian archipelago. As a key figure in the development of evolutionary theory, Wallace focused much of his research on the distinct avian fauna of the Wallacea region. The owl was identified as a unique species endemic to the island of Sumbawa, inhabiting the dense forest canopy where its specialized morphology—including its distinctively rounded wings and tail—allows for precise, short-distance maneuvering through thick vegetation.

The species is distinguished by its reddish-brown plumage and prominent ear tufts, which help it blend into the montane forests it calls home.
