Whiskered Yuhina

The Whiskered Yuhina, classified as Yuhina flavicollis, is a small passerine bird belonging to the white-eye family, Zosteropidae. It is native to the temperate forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests of the Himalayas, ranging across countries including India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. The species is characterized by its distinctive crest, rounded wings, and a notched tail, which facilitate its agile movement through dense forest canopies where it typically travels in small, active groups.

First described in the mid-19th century, the Yuhina genus reflects the complex avian biodiversity of the Sino-Himalayan region. The Whiskered Yuhina is identified by the thin black line that marks its cheek, providing the namesake 'whisker' appearance. Evolutionary biologists note that its morphology—specifically the wing and tail structure—has been highly successful for the bird's niche feeding habits, which primarily involve gleaning insects and consuming nectar or berries in high-altitude environments.
