White-browed Wagtail

The White-browed Wagtail, scientifically identified as Motacilla maderaspatensis, is a large, striking member of the wagtail family native to the Indian subcontinent. It was formally described by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1789. Evolutionarily, its distinctive black-and-white plumage and robust stature are adaptations to the diverse riverine and wetland habitats it occupies, where its pointed wings and long, characteristically forked tail allow for precise, agile flight while foraging for insects along the water's edge.

The bird is frequently recognized by its persistent, rhythmic tail-bobbing behavior, a trait that defines the genus name Motacilla.
