White-eared Brown-Dove

The White-eared Brown-Dove, Phapitreron leucotis, is an endemic species belonging to the pigeon and dove family Columbidae, found throughout the Philippine archipelago. It evolved within the dense, humid tropical forests and secondary growth of the region, where its distinct plumage—characterized by a subtle white facial stripe and a brownish-olive dorsal coloration—serves as essential camouflage against the canopy. The species was formally described by the ornithologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1823, marking its entry into the Western scientific catalog during a period of intense biological exploration of Southeast Asian biodiversity.
