White-eared Conebill

The White-eared Conebill is a small passerine bird native to the humid forests and shrublands of northern South America, particularly within the tropical regions of Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, and Ecuador. First formally described by the French ornithologist Frédéric de Lafresnaye in 1852, the species belongs to the tanager family, Thraupidae. Its discovery occurred during a period of intense European exploration into the neotropical avian fauna, where naturalists sought to document the extensive biodiversity of the Andean foothills and the lowlands of the Darien Gap.

The design of the bird reflects its evolutionary niche as an active, foliage-gleaning insectivore. It is characterized by a distinctive notched tail and rounded wings, which allow for high maneuverability while navigating dense canopy vegetation. The species is visually defined by its contrasting plumage, featuring a dark slate-grey body and a striking white patch on the auriculars—the area surrounding the ear—from which it derives its common name.
