White-necked Crow

The White-necked Crow, Corvus leucognaphalus, is a distinct corvid native to the Caribbean, specifically found on the island of Hispaniola. Historically, these birds were once widespread across the archipelago, but they have faced significant population declines due to habitat loss and fragmentation of the primary forests they inhabit. Unlike many of its relatives, this species possesses a uniquely guttural, gargling call and has evolved to thrive in dense, high-canopy environments where its broad wing shape allows for maneuverability amidst thick foliage.

Ornithologically, the bird is noted for its rounded tail and its social, yet secretive, nature. It was first formally described by the French naturalist François Marie Daudin in 1800. The species' decline is closely linked to the environmental history of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, as human expansion into the Sierra de Bahoruco and other mountainous regions has reduced its breeding grounds. Conservation efforts currently focus on protecting these remaining forest fragments, as the species serves as an essential indicator of ecosystem health within its limited range.
